remove the timing cover bolts. don't forget the 4 or 5 that enter from the bottom of the oil pan. unbolt the fuel pump eccentric. slide the old timing set off. clean up the front end. install new gears and chain. and reverse the removal process. use plenty of sealer on the timing cover, esp around the bottom near the oil pan.
The B6 or B7 generation S4, or any S4 with the 4.2L V8 engine, will have the most expensive cost to replace the timing chain. The reason is because the timing chain is located behind the engine, next to the vehicle’s firewall. In order to access the components, the entire engine has to be removed from the vehicle.

4.2 v8 timing chain streched at 50k miles??? A6 / S6 (C6 Platform) Discussion Discussion forum for the C6 Audi A6 produced from 2004-present and Audi S6 produced from 2007 - 2011 Community Links
Yup. Welcome to Audi land. First step. Remove engine. The chain is on the back Timing chain on those engines is a huge affair. Parts only are between 2-3k depending on source and if you do the cam adjusters as recommended but not required. There is a reason those cars are cheap right around the 170k mark :P.
